Melissa reviewing the speech appartusPhonetics class

We are now two weeks into our first language class, Phonetics. “Phonetics” is the study of speech sounds. Each letter stands for one speech sound and each sound is represented by only one letter. To learn phonetics we have to learn and new alphabet and also a good number of weird sounds that we don’t have in English. The purpose of phonetics is to be able to write down an unwritten language and to familiarize us with the sounds that we will find in the new language. Learning how to make the sounds right will also help us to sound “more native” when we speak another language. We are having a lot of fun in phonetics. We are getting to know our small group well and enjoy laughing at each other. Our speech apparatus’ sure can make some funny sounds!
